Concerning the Squeezing in the Grave
by The Albaani Blog
Translated by Ahmed Abu Turaab
Questioner: He said in the Musnad … the hadith of Hudhaifah, who said, “We were with the Prophet of Allaah, صلى الله عليه وسلم, during a funeral. So when we got to the grave he sat down on his two shins and started to look at it, and then said, ‘The believer is squeezed in it one time such that his ‘hamaa’il’ are crushed, and the disbeliever is covered in Fire.’”
He said the hamaa’il are the veins of the testicles. What does, “… the veins of his testicles are crushed …” mean?
Al-Albani: It’s an expression to show the severity of the punishment. [The compiler of the book said, 'I.e, his ribs are crushed to such an extent that it affects his testicles.']
Questioner: Namely, the believer will be squeezed to such an extent?
Al-Albani: And his ribs will overlap, no one will escape it, not even Sa’d ibn Mu’aadh [did] as he, عليه السلام, said in some authentic hadtihs.
Questioner: Namely, he will feel pain from this squeezing?
Al-Albani: … without doubt. When the ribs overlap then this is severe pain, but it does not persist. One squeezing and then everything returns to its natural state, if he was a righteous person then [he will be in the state of a] righteous person, and if he was an evil person then [he will be the state of an] evil person, as we just explained that a window is opened up in the grave for the dead person.
Questioner: Namely, the squeezing, there is no escape from it?
Al-Albani: There is no escape from it.

Here’s the video a brother made of this post, jazaahullaahu khairaa:

Akhee ….would like to get the hadeeth of Saad ibn Muaadh detailing that no one would be free from the squeezing of the grave ONLY if it is possible for you…
Jazakallahu khyr …a very thoughtful reminder about the punishment of the grave..
The hadith about the fact that the grave squeezes the one put into it and if anyone were to be saved from it it would have been Sa’d, radiyallaahu anhu, is reported by Ahmad, and in Takhrij al-Ihyaa (5/259) al-Iraaqi said, “Its chain of narration is good.” And in as-Siyar al-Dhahabi, said, “It’s chain of narration is strong.” And in al-Silsilah (1695) al-Albaani said, “And in summary, the hadith, with all of it’s paths of narration and supporting narrations is authentic without doubt.”
Jazakallahu khyr ya akhee Ahmad…barakallahu feek
As salamu alaykum,
Does not surah al-Mulk save from grave punishment? Maybe I confused it..
Wa alaikum salaam wa rahmatullaah
No you are not confused and it is a good question. In Ad-Da’eefah Shaikh al-Albaani mentioned, “The squeezing in the grave is other than/not part of the punishment of the grave …”
JazakAllahu khayran! I didn’t know this info, May Allah ease the passage from this dunya, save us from the punishment of grave and make our barzah from the gardens of paradise. Ameen! Was-salamu alayk!
Wa iyyaak, aameen yo your du’aa, wa alaikum salaam wa rahmatullaah.
Akhi Abu Mohamed, the hadith is: “The grave has squeezing. If anyone were to be saved from it or spared it, Sa’d ibn Mu’aadh would have been spared it.” (Sheikh Al-Albani rahimahullah classed it as Sahih in Assilsila Assahiha; 1695).
Sister Umm Asiya, you are right about Surah Al-Mulk, but this squeeze in the grave is not considered to be part of the punishment of the grave and it is general for everyone and no one will be saved from it. Al-Dhahabi rahimahullah said in Siyar A’lam Alnubala’ that this squeeze is not part of the punishment of the grave, but rather it is something which the believer feels just like he feels pain when he loses a loved one in the dunya, or the pain which he feels when he is sick, or like the questioning of the 2 angels in the grave, or the standing on the day of judgement and its horrors, among other things which he mentioned. So this squeezing is not considered part of the punishment of the grave.
Brother Ahmed, may Allah reward you for translating some of the works of Sheikh Al-Albani rahimahullah. They are much needed! Baaraka Allahu feekum.
Wa iyyaak.
Jazakallahu khyr wa barakallahu feek
It was reported in the hadeeth of al-Miqdaam ibn Ma’di Karb that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“The martyr (shaheed) has seven blessings from Allaah: he is forgiven from the moment his blood is first shed; he will be shown his place in Paradise; he will be spared the trial of the grave; and he will be secure on the Day of the Greatest Terror (the Day of Judgement); there will be placed on his head a crown of dignity, one ruby of which is better than this world and all that is in it; he will be married to seventy-two of al-hoor al-‘iyn; and he will be permitted to intercede for seventy of his relatives.”
so doesnt it mean that a martyr will be spared from squeezing of grave? plz reply
Akhi zurfishan, the squeezing of the grave is not considered part of the punishment of the grave, and no one will be spared from this squeezing. Read my last comment above for more details.
Will a believer be questioned by Munkar and Nakir at the state of squeezed?
